YA Scavenger Hunt 2017: The Last Jedi

Welcome to the YA Scavenger Hunt! This bi-annual event was first organized by author Colleen Houck as a way to give readers a chance to gain access to exclusive bonus material from their favorite authors, and a chance to win some awesome prizes. At this hunt, you not only get access to exclusive content from each author, you also get a clue for the hunt. Add up the clues, and you can enter for our prize–one lucky winner will receive one signed book from each author on the hunt in my team (including WASTE OF SPACE). Somewhere along the way is a deleted scene from WASTE OF SPACE, too. So, you know. Get on that.

SCAVENGER HUNT PUZZLE

Directions: Somewhere below, you’ll find my favorite number. Collect the favorite numbers of all the authors on the blue team, and then add them up.

Entry Form: Once you’ve added up all the numbers, make sure you fill out the form here to officially qualify for the grand prize. Only entries that have the correct number will qualify.

Rules: Open internationally, anyone below the age of 18 should have a parent or guardian’s permission to enter. To be eligible for the grand prize, you must submit the completed entry form by Sunday, October 8, at noon Pacific Time. THE AUTHORS

Betsy Aldredge and Carrie DuBois-Shaw are the authors of the YA romance, “Sasquatch, Love, and Imaginary Things” (Simon Pulse, August 8, 2017), which has been called “the most hilarious, charming, feminist Sasquatch-hunting book ever to grace a bookshelf,” by author Alison Cherry and “a delightfully quirky and hilarious debut,” by Darcy Woods. A retelling of Pride and Prejudice, focusing on a family of Jewish Bigfoot hunters, SASQUATCH was the Grand Champion of Query Kombat in 2014.

THE BOOK

THE BONUS CONTENT

A recipe! Take it away, Betsy and Carrie:

One great thing about writing a book that involves camping out in the Pacific Northwest and searching for Sasquatch is that it lends itself to a lot of fun and yummy themed treats. We wanted to share a recipe with you, but had a hard time choosing from all the great ideas. We nixed some for being too gross. Um, who would eat something called Bigfoot droppings? Not us, no matter how much chocolate was involved. We eliminated other recipes for being too complicated. Yeti-shaped cakes, we’re talking about you. So, after some research and drooling, here’s our favorite, easy recipe to get you in the mood for reading SASQUATCH, LOVE, AND OTHER IMAGINARY THINGS.

Naturally, any YA romance set in a forest is going to have a camp fire, which is inevitably going to lead to s’mores and smooching. While you’ll have to find your own swoony rival who annoys you until you realize they’re actually pretty cool, at least we’ve got you covered in terms of dessert.

Enjoy!

S’mores Pie
One prepared graham cracker crust, or individual size crusts
One package dark or semi-sweet chocolate chips. We like dark chocolate, but you choose your own taste adventure.
¾ cup heavy cream
One package of marshmallows, either small or regular sized. Use whatever you have on hand

Combine the chocolate chips and heavy cream in a sauce pan on the stove on medium, stirring slowly until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth.

Pour the chocolate into the prepared crust, then refrigerate, covered in plastic wrap, until it sets, a few hours. Can be left overnight.

When you’re ready to serve, cut the marshmallows in half (if using large ones) and arrange them in circles around the pie, starting on the outside and working your way toward the center.

Preheat the broiler. Broil the pie for a minute, rotating as needed until the marshmallows are brown.

Serve while still warm. Share with your love interest. Or not.
